First Drive: 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Duramax


The 2016 Chevy Colorado Duramax turbo-diesel is finally here. GM told us about the midsize diesel pickup trucks over a year ago, but they kept the promise to introduce it before the 2015 calendar year is over. Is it a good time to rollout a light-duty diesel vehicle? It may not be if you have heard about the VW “Dieselgate” scandal. Nonetheless, the Chevy Colorado and the upcoming GMC Canyon Duramax will be the only midsize trucks with a diesel engine option in the United States. They have this part of the segment to themselves.

The Colorado Duramax is powered by a 2.8-liter I4 turbo-diesel that makes 181 horsepower @ 3,400 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm. It is backed up by a 6-speed automatic transmission. Take a look at this detailed look at the “baby” Duramax engine.

The test truck you see here is the 2016 Colorado Z71 Trailboss package in a crew-cab configuration. Diesel power will be offered on LT and Z71 crew cab models in two or four wheel drive.

Those who tow will like the following stats. The truck is rated to tow a maximum of 7,700 lbs in the 2WD configuration and 7,600 lbs with 4WD. The integrated trailer-brake controller and an exhaust brake are included. The cost of the Duramax power package is $3,730.

The axle ration in the back is at 3.42, which should strike a good balance between performance, acceleration, and fuel economy. The engine uses a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system to help it meet all the required emissions standards.
