Lightyear One's solar powered car
AMSTERDAM - Dutch car company, Lightyear, managed to develop an electric car that utilizes solar power, Lightyear One. In fact, the car can be used for months without being charged. Lightyear claims its product is the first solar-powered family car that is ready for mass production.
Currently, each year the distance of worldwide car use when combined to reach 9.5 trillion kilometers or equivalent to the energy produced by sunlight for a year to drive the car. It uses fossil fuels. Our goal is to accelerate the adoption of electric cars. So in 2035, a year of sunlight it can be converted into electrical energy for the car, "said Tesse Hartjes, from Lightyear. Currently Lightyear just got a reservation of five units of Lightyear One. Understandably, this is not a cheap car. One unit dibanderol 119 thousand euros, or approximately Rp1, 7 billion.
The company also does not set a high sales target for its products. Lightyear only targets the sale of 200 units of solar cars by 2018. Unfortunately, Lightyear does not disclose the suryanya car's specifications. The company was founded by alumni of TU University Eindhoven. They are members of the solar car team who won the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge event in Cruiser in 2013.
"We use the knowledge of students to develop solar cars that can be mass produced," said Hartjes.
Vehicle components made in the Netherlands and partly imported from abroad. The assembly is done at Automotive Campus in Helmond.
To develop one product from research to become finished product required fund approximately 1 million euro. The researchers developed it so that the price could be much cheaper. He added that solar cars have the advantage in the future compared to conventional engine vehicles. This is because the car manufacturers are fixated on existing models, while solar car cars are still many innovations that can be created. This is where the chances of getting a very large investor. But Hertjes did not dismiss there is a big challenge facing him, namely the limited exposure to sunlight. In the Netherlands, sunlight does not shine long, especially in winter. But he sure can solve the problem.
"There is enough light in the Netherlands to drive a car 10 thousand miles to Lightyear One in a year and then the car can be charged at the charging station.
"If Tesla knows this technique from the beginning, they might also make solar cars," he concluded.
